12/5/2011: Hayley Marschall was selected to the TGCA All-State volleyball team for the second consecutive year. She was also chosen to compete in the TGCA ALL-STAR game which will be held in Arlington in July during the annual coaching clinic. The All-Star is 12 girls from East and 12 girls from West and they can be 1A, 2A, or 3A divisions. Hayley is on the WEST team. Coach Gina Lumpkins said, “I am very proud of Hayley and her accomplishments. She is an inspiration to future athletes. She didn’t start out as the “STAR” varsity player as a freshman. She didn’t even make the varsity team until her junior year. Hayley is a great example of committing to something and then WORKING at it until you accomplish your goals. Hayley has not only contributed great skill to our program, but great leadership as well.”
Lauryn Ahrns has verbally committed to go to UT Tyler to play volleyball next year.

Instead of one big fundraiser there are going to be two, Thanksgiving and Christmas. The first fundraiser will just include meat products. The students are to have their orders in by the 17th and 18th of November and the meat will be delivered on November 22nd. The second fundraiser will include meat, fruit, and cookie dough. This delivery will be right before Christmas. If you have any questions please let us know!
11/1/2011 – The band marches at 1:55 in the Alamodome for prelims…Finals schedule will be announced at 5:35 at the retreat but it will probably be more like 6:00 before we would get final word…Finals begin at 6:45 with 1A’s and about 8:15 for 2A’s if my math is correct. So if you are one of those planning on coming to watch us in finals, you would need to be ready to roll when the announcement was made. It could be a really tight turnaround for us.
10/31/2011 - You may not have heard the roar from Elmendorff at 11:00 PM Saturday night but as many of you have probably already heard, the band advanced to state for the first time in class AA, the 4th time since I’ve been here, and the 10th time overall since 1990 on Saturday. Take a moment to congratulate these students on their fine showing (3rd place in finals). When we were going around the track for prelims, I heard a lady tell someone “We have to see Harper. They are always good!”
Somebody asked how many bands are still marching….The answer is 19 in class AA. 7 will make finals. Someone also asked when was the last time we went…2007 – we finished 3rd in class A. 2 years ago, we finished 8th in Area. State marching contest only happens for each classification every other year. This year is A/AA/AAAA. We are at the northern end of the south Texas area. Mason is in area central as is Junction. Our area is area south. It extends to almost Houston and all points south.
10/27/2011 –
I had the privilege to watch our fantastic group of students athletes run at the District Cross Country meet in Comfort yesterday. I am very proud to say that Harper dominated . We are the District Team Champion in every division that we competed in from Varsity to Jr. High. Their hard work and dedication to this very difficult competition deserves our recognition. Congratulations to Coach Reid and all of his athletes on another District Championship. Great Job!!! – Chris Stevenson

Student council reps will be coming by every class every day that week, keeping track of students who have dressed up in that day’s theme. Stickers will be handed out to all who dress up and then on Friday there will be a drawing for cool prizes for the students who dressed up the most days. The student council kids should be coming by your room this week or early next week to ask you for rosters of who you have 1st or 6th period. If you had these printed out already that would be really helpful to them.

10-20-2011 – Thank you for all your SUPPORT of the PTO Fall Book Fair! During a time when we are all struggling to make ends meet, we are reminded what a great community we live in! The Fair Sales were $6,324.87 which is about $400.00 more than last Fall’s Book Fair. We were able to gift about $1,600.00 worth of books to OUR Libraries! And PTO received $1,000.00 to put towards the Harper Staff Christmas Gift!! Another nice figure is $53.00 in One For Books Donations was collected. With this money, we were able to buy books for teachers from some of their wish lists. On top of that, Scholastic matches each dollar we raised with that program and gifts one book to a literacy program for kids in need. We also purchased a couple books for our students who we were told really needed them. We also had a few online orders, hopefully in the future that will become an even better option. Again, thanks for all of the support from the Parents and Teachers, and all those who volunteered! Thank you - Amanda Bennett!

10/6/2011 – This week our high school senior Josh Day received some very exciting news! He has been invited to join the Hill County Elite running club and race at Nike South, the Regional race for Nike Nationals. He was invited to join this running club based on his incredible race times this season. I’m not sure we have ever had a Harper athlete be ranked in a national elite group of competitors as Josh is. On average during the season, Josh runs about 80 miles per week, and in the summer that number jumps to 100 miles. As you can see, this invitation is the result of a tremendous amount of hard work and dedication on his part.
