Since 1991, the Harper Mighty Longhorn Band has been consistently ranked as one of the premier bands in the state of Texas, having participated in the Texas State Marching Contest on 8 of 9 opportunities and numerous Texas State Wind Ensemble Contests. Last year’s band finished in third place at the prestigious Texas State Marching Contest in the Alamodome. This year’s band has made the transition to class 2A in fine fashion while continuing to shine. The students, ranging from grades 7-12, are driven to achieve their best, and continue to show it by consistently placing the highest percentage of students in All-Region, All-Area, and All-State Bands of any area program.

Harper has had at least 1 All-State musician each of the last 6 years (Brooke Toole, Clarinet; Molly Leinweber, Clarinet; Tyler Krueger, French Horn; Hannah Leinweber (2 time selection), Tenor Trombone; and Courtney Sander (3 time selection), Bass Trombone), a feat equaled by few schools regardless of classification. Recent alumni of the Harper band have been awarded scholarships to such well-regarded institutions as The University of Texas at Austin, University of North Texas, Texas Lutheran University, Texas A & M, and Boston University. The 1997 Harper High School Band, under the direction of Gary Potter, was named the Class A Honor Band, denoting that band as the Outstanding Class A Band in the State of Texas. A recording of the 2007 Harper Band as it performed David Holsinger’s On a Hymnsong of Philip Bliss can be heard on the Association of Texas Small School Bands Outstanding Performance Series CD. And the tradition continues…
